Dumbbell Nebula (M 27)

The last breath of a star like our Sun – three hours and 45 minutes of light.

About the object

The Dumbbell (M 27) in Vulpecula was the first planetary nebula ever discovered (Charles Messier, 1764). It is gas shed by a dying star whose hot core – a white dwarf – now makes it glow. It lies roughly 1,200 light years away.
